In sport, exceptional talent often captures the spotlight. Yet behind every inspiring athlete is someone whose selfless support makes the impossible possible. This is the story of 17-year-old Dean Hart from Durban North, a goalkeeper born with one right forearm, whose remarkable journey is deeply intertwined with the generosity and innovation of Shane Breedt, founder of Freedivers South Africa.
Dean’s journey took a game-changing turn thanks to Shane Breedt, founder of Freedivers South Africa, a leading spearfishing and freediving equipment brand based in Durban North. Shane wasn’t just a business owner—he was a fellow member of Riverside Hockey Club and a teammate of Dean’s, witnessing first-hand the grit Dean brought to the field.
Recognising both Dean’s talent and the limitations he faced, Shane took action, designing a custom piece of goalkeeping equipment now known as “the bumper.”
“The bumper is a custom-moulded forearm shield,” explains Shane. “It mimics the blocking surface of a glove, giving Dean the protection and manoeuvrability he needs—without compromise.”
Lightweight, durable, and engineered precisely to Dean’s unique needs, the bumper became a true equaliser, enabling Dean to perform at the highest levels of junior hockey.
Dean’s father, Bryan Hart, reflected on the ripple effect of this generosity:
“It takes a village to raise a child. The 031 is full of amazing people who do incredible things to give others opportunities. Myself and Dean are lucky to know one of them.”
The first version of the bumper, built from lightweight materials, served Dean for several seasons. But after a training incident revealed some limitations, Shane didn’t stop there. He returned to the workshop and built Version 2, crafted from high-density foam with improved shaping, enhanced protection, and refined balance.
“Shane didn’t just make equipment,” says Dean. “He invested his time, talent, and heart. He gave me something that makes me feel equal on the field.”
Dean began hockey at just four years old with Riverside Hockey Club. His love for the game grew, and he never let his physical difference define his limits.
“I never saw my arm as a limitation. I just wanted to play, to be part of the team, and to compete.”
That mindset carried him to earn a spot as goalkeeper for Riverside and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial team, competing at the highest levels.
Shane’s investment was more than technical, it was personal.
“Shane took time to understand exactly what I needed. That meant a lot to me,” says Dean. “It’s more than just equipment; it’s someone believing in you.”
Their collaboration is a defining feature of Dean’s journey, proving that innovation in sport starts with people, not just technology.
Dean’s goals stretch beyond hockey fields.
“I want to keep growing, learning, and competing,” he shares, aiming to study and play at Stellenbosch University.
With determination, community support, and Shane’s continued innovation, Dean’s future is promising and inspiring.
Dean Hart is more than a talented goalkeeper. He represents what can happen when talent meets support and creativity. Shane Breedt’s dedication transformed a limitation into an opportunity, reminding us all that greatness comes not just from ability, but from those who stand beside us.
