Guiding principles

Restoring sportsmanship and civility to the sports arena in South Africa must become a shared concern. Riverside hockey club has identified a need to educate both coaches and players from a grassroots level at schools, and the club environment. High-performance core beliefs and principles provide that opportunity, emphasising the development of both physical and mental discipline, as well as a focus on self-improvement and personal growth which ultimately benefits teamwork, whether on or off the field.

01
Respect

All players are expected to display proper respect and courtesy, and maintain civility toward opposing coaches and athletes, game officials and spectators at all times. Respect the game and live up to our own highest personal standard of sportsmanship

02
Commitment

Commitment or dedication, come from the desire to achieve success. RHC members will be given an opportunity to identify their personal goals that will guide the path to excel at the highest levels of performance.

03
Humility

Failure is part of the game and good sportsmanship does not use the occasion to make excuses or blame. Coaches and Members will maintain composure, learn and prepare for the next game.

04
Discipline

Sportsmanship dictates self-control and respect. There is no place for taunting, embarrassing or humiliating either a club member, opponent or game official. Our members will be coached to exercises self-control, a virtue of Sportsmanship.

05
Responsibility

Players as well as designated leaders bear the responsibility of arriving for practice. Leaders by design teach the value of sporting conduct in both word and deed to members.

06
Honour

The responsibility to demonstrate and develop character and sportsmanship should never be subordinated to the desire to win. RHC values the honourable pursuit of victory, rather than the outcome itself.

07
Excellence

Personal mastery, increased skill development, as well as performing to the best of their abilities are the hallmarks of good sportsmanship. Success relates to the effort put into realising one’s personal potential.

08
Teamwork

Behaviour reflects on the team in general. Moreover, a team player does not condone unsportsmanlike conduct from teammates. Grit and developing team confidence in the midst of competition is a requirement.
